Eric Wilson,
Acting Director, Office of Transition

Eric Wilson assumed the role of acting director of the Office of Transition at the Office of Naval Research (ONR) in Arlington, Va., in January 2012.

He holds a bachelor's in Business Administration from Old Dominion University, and a master's in Acquisition and Contracts from the Naval Postgraduate School. A certified contract manager, he is a member of the Acquisition Professional Community.

Earning qualifications as a submarine supply officer and a naval aviation supply officer, his at-sea assignments included supply officer aboard USS BIRMINGHAM (SSN 695), stock control officer aboard USS PELELIU (LHA 5), assistant supply officer aboard USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN (CVN 72), and supply officer aboard USS IWO JIMA (LHD 7). 

Ashore, he served as resident assistant Navy exchange officer at Naval Air Station, Agana Guam; contracting intern at Naval Sea Systems Command in Arlington, Va.; P-3 weapon systems manager and contracts division director at the Naval Aviation Supply Office in Philadelphia, Penn. (subsequently re-named the Naval Inventory Control Point, Philadelphia); and director of Ship Support and Services Division, director of the Policy and Compliance Division, and director of Acquisition Reengineering at the Military Sealift Command, Washington D.C.. Later, he served as acting deputy assistant secretary of the Navy for Management and Budget for the assistant secretary of the Navy for Research, Development and Acquisition, and director of Business Operations and Acquisition at ONR.

He has received numerous awards and decorations, including the Defense Superior Service Medal, two Legion of Merit awards, two Meritorious Service Medal awards, three Navy Commendation Medals, and three Navy Achievement Medals. A retired Navy captain, Wilson has served as the deputy director of Transition since December 2010. 

The Office of Transition facilitates technology transition to the fleet, force and acquisition communities. It accomplishes its mission through a comprehensive portfolio of programs, including:

  • Future Naval Capabilities
  • Joint Concept Technology Demonstrations
  • Manufacturing Technology Program
  • SBIR-STTR Program
  • Navy Technology Transfer Program
  • Transition Initiatives Programs

Per the Naval Science & Technology Strategic Plan, acquisition enablers constitute 30 percent of ONR's overall research investments. Future Naval Capabilities, or FNCs, are component technologies that deliver in a three to five years time horizon. In addition to FNC funding, this component includes approximately two-thirds of the Marine Corps basic/applied research, the Manufacturing Technology (ManTech) program and the majority of the low-observable counter low observable funds.
