Basic Research Challenge

What Is It?

The Office of Naval Research Discovery and invention (D&I) portfolio sponsors research in multiple areas. The Basic Research Challenge (BRC) is a basic research program within this D&I portfolio.

How Does It Work?

ONR issues solicitations for the Basic Research Challenge.

What Will It Accomplish?

The Basic Research Challenge extends the core basic research program into new areas and keeps the core program refreshed.

The Basic Research Challenge (BRC) program competitively selects and funds research programs in new areas not addressed by the current basic research program. The program stimulates new, high-risk basic research projects in multidisciplinary and departmental collaborative efforts. It funds topics that foster leading-edge science and attract new principal investigators and organizations.

Basic Research Challenge awards span a period of four years. Topics are submitted by ONR program officers and are selected for inclusion in the solicitation by ONR’s director of research.

For fiscal year 2010, basic research challenge topics include:

  • Biologically-inspired Intelligent Metamaterials
  • Computing with Natural Language
  • The Micro-physics of a Liquid-solid-gas Interaction
  • Acoustical Uncertainty due to Marine Mammals and Fish
