Conformal Antenna

What Is It?

Conformal low visual profile tactical antennas.

How Does It Work?

New radio frequency technologies applied using three-dimensionally textured dielectric materials with precisely implemented transmissions lines.

What Will It Accomplish?

Allow communications antennas to be deployed with a much reduced visual signature enabling better survivability of key communications nodes in the battlespace.

The Conformal Antenna project was created in response to a need stated by the Commander, Marine Forces Pacific (MARFORPAC).

These low visual profile tactical antennas allow mobile communications nodes to be equipped so they present an appearance on the battlefield that does not readily identify them as communications assets.

The currently equipped HMMWV has a visual signature that readily identifies it as a communications node and, therefore, a desirable target.

A HMMWV equipped with the new conformal antenna technology is much more difficult to visually identify as a key communications node, which makes it a much less obvious target, thereby increasing survivability of communications assets.

Research Opportunities

For line of sight antennas: co-site mitigation methods; transmission line design and materials

For SATCOM antennas: economical materials and fabrication methods; economical phase shifters; economical satellite tracking methods
