Summer Faculty Research Program

What Is It?

The Office of Naval Research (ONR) provides a summer research opportunity for science and engineering faculty to perform research at a Navy laboratory. Faculty may also spend their sabbatical performing research in a Navy lab.

Eligibility:

This program is open to U.S. citizens, nationals or legal permanent residents holding a teaching or research position at a U.S. college or university. Some restrictions apply to permanent residents regarding eligibility for a Department of Defense security clearance.

The Summer Faculty Research Program provides science and engineering faculty members with opportunities to participate in research at 18 naval laboratories around the country.

Over the course of the 10-week summer program, professors work with Navy scientists and engineers to conduct basic and applied research of naval interest.

Participants work with professional peers in the naval laboratory environment on research tasks of mutual interest. Information about the research interests of the participating laboratories is available via the Web site. The research for the summer is defined in advance through correspondence and an optional pre-program visit to the research site.
 
Working at naval laboratories allows professors to broaden the scope of their research while gaining an understanding of Department of Navy research interests and potentially increasing the opportunity to pursue and gain funding for research at their home institution.
 
Participants have an opportunity to establish continuing research relationships with the host laboratories and network with fellow participants.
