University Research Initiative

What Is It?

The Office of Naval Research Discovery & Invention portfolio sponsors research in multiple research areas.  The University Research Initiative is a collection of specialized research programs performed by academic research institutions, including the Defense University Research Instrumentation Program (DURIP) and the Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI).

How Does It Work?

ONR issues solicitations for both the DURIP and MURI.

What Will It Accomplish?

It provides Navy and Marine Corps with relevant basic research and builds infrastructure to support future research.

The Defense University Research Instrumentation Program

  • Supports university research infrastructure essential to high quality Navy relevant research by providing research instrumentation that is necessary to carry out cutting-edge research.

Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative

  • Involves teams of researchers investigating high priority topics and opportunities that intersect more than one traditional technical discipline. For many military problems this multidisciplinary approach serves to stimulate innovations, accelerate research progress and expedite transition of results into naval applications.
