Early Student Support for Physical Oceanography Investigators

Planning Letter Due Date: May 31, 2011

The Office of Naval Research (ONR) Physical Oceanography Program is interested in re-invigorating graduate student participation on ONR-funded projects and initiatives, and will set aside core program funds to support beginning graduate students working with ONR-funded investigators.

  • Grants will cover students support for up to three years, including up to one month per year of supervisor/advisor support
  • Students must be involved in existing or proposed ONR-sponsored research 
  • A separate planning letter for this initiative should be submitted to the core program 
  • The planning letter should include the student’s resume and planned thesis activities 
  • Planning letter title should be “Early Student Support for …” with the remainder of the title being the current title of the existing or proposed ONR research grant 
  • More guidance on this initiative will be given at the proposal stage 
  • Up to four new students each year may be funded under this effort

Please use the standard Physical Oceanography planning letter submission process. Planning letters for the Early Student Support thrust should use the naming convention “AdvisorLastName_ESS11_PL” (.pdf or .doc).
