Advanced Aerospace Propulsion Program

The Advanced Aerospace Propulsion science and technology (S&T) focus area is a critical technology area required to achieve ONR’s mission of providing S&T products necessary for the operational concepts and visions for the Navy and Marine Corps of the future. Propulsion system capability enables naval forces to achieve the reach, responsiveness and persistence needed to execute their missions, though at a price. In the case of turbine engine propulsion systems naval air vehicles, they typically are the primary fleet readiness driver and are the largest cost driver in operational systems since they require extensive development and maintenance/support. However, with the large impact on readiness and cost comes the greatest opportunity for improvements due to advanced technology.

Under the Advanced Aerospace Propulsion Program, ONR is working with industry, academia, and other Department of Defense services and government agencies focusing on developing and maturing propulsion-related technologies for Department of the Navy needs. The program will will significantly enhance warfighter capability, flexibility, environmental compliance and readiness with a substantial reduction in life cycle costs.
