ARLINGTON, Virginia – Aug. 3, 2009 – Diversity/Careers in Engineering & Information Technology magazine has recently named the Office of Naval Research (ONR) a "Best Diversity Company."

The organizations chosen by readers and web site visitors were recognized for their support of minorities and women, their attention to work/life balance and their commitment to supplier diversity. According to the magazine, specific emphasis was placed upon the selection of "corporations, government agencies and other organizations that do the best work in diversity."

Known as the preeminent destination for good ideas and innovative concepts in science and technology (S&T), ONR´s workforce and its partnerships with academia, small business, industry and government provide technological advantages for U.S. naval forces and our allies.

"Diversity of thought fosters innovation, which is essential to what we do in science and technology," said Dr. Walter F. Jones, ONR´s executive director. "Recognizing the unique potential everyone adds in cultural background, gender, age, and ethnic diversity provides the foundation for creative interaction and healthy debate in our workforce."

Easily on par with the top 50 companies for whom to work in the country, ONR´s quality of life and compensation offerings are extremely competitive.

Consistently rated among the Most Admired Companies for Minority Professionals by Black Engineer, Hispanic Engineer, and Women of Color magazines, ONR was awarded the inaugural Global Congress of Diversity Executives (CODE) Award at the Black Engineer of the Year Award (BEYA) conference in February 2009. ONR was also recognized by the Office of Personnel Management as a "2008 Best Place to Work in the Federal Government" after tabulating responses from more than 221,000 civil servants who participated in its Federal Human Capital Survey. The survey, considered to be the most comprehensive and authoritative rating of employee engagement in the federal government, evaluated 283 federal organizations.

ONR´s Best Diversity Company, CODE Award, Most Admired Employer status and ranking as a Best Place to Work reflects well on the U.S. Navy. In particular, these accolades reflect well on the Navy´s culture, its emphasis on a Total Workforce that values uniqueness, different perspectives and talent, and its ability to attract, develop, mentor and retain top diverse talent as it maintains a strong, talented and relevant force.

According to Diversity/Careers magazine, ONR was ranked alongside such entities as Intel, the U.S. Navy, Disney, Microsoft, Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), 3M, Coca Cola, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), DuPont, National Security Agency (NSA), Ford Motor Company, AT&T, Lockheed Martin, Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), Northrop Grumman, Boeing Company, Sandia National Laboratories, General Dynamics and the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL).
