Blow the Ballast!
With the purchase of the USS Holland over a 100 years ago, the U.S.
Navy's Submarine Force was born. Since those early days, science and
technology have drastically improved submarine safety and rescue.
In May 1939, a pioneer of submarine rescue, Swede Momsen, and his innovative
technologies saved the sunken submarine USS Squalus and her
men during our nation's first deep-sea rescue. That pioneering and innovative
spirit continues today as we strive to make the waters as safe as possible
for our Sailors and Marines in, on and under the ocean.
