The lanching of the USS Dolphin (Milne Special Collections
and Archives Department, University of New Hampshire Library, Durham,
NH).
The current fleet also includes two Research Submarines.
The first, the USS Dolphin (AGSS 555), is a diesel-electric,
deep-diving vessel intended for civilian and Navy research and development
work. The other research submarine, the NR-1, is nuclear-powered
vessel, which provides a platform for civilian and military deep-sea
research, aids in engineering underwater systems, and assists in deep-sea
search and recovery.
