3. Deep-sea trenches. A Navy-owned submarine, the Trieste, still holds the record for deepest dive after journeying to the bottom of one deep-sea trench, the Marianas Trench, on January 23, 1960. The Trieste dove 35, 800 feet into a trench within the Mariannas Trench called Challenger Deep.
