Dr. Wen Masters heads the Office of Naval Research (ONR) Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (C4ISR) Department.
Masters entered the Senior Executive Service in October 2006 as the division director for ONR’s Mathematics, Computer and Information Sciences (MCIS) Research Division, where she continues to lead the planning, execution and management of integrated basic research, applied research and advanced technology development of ONR science and technology programs that enable naval capabilities in C4ISR.
She joined the Federal Civilian Service in April 1995 as a program officer in applied analysis, directing research programs in applied math and image analysis for command and control, sensing and surveillance, and targeting applications.
From September 2004 to September 2006, she served as the lead program director at the National Science Foundation (NSF), with oversight of the planning, execution and management of an NSF-wide funding priority known as the Mathematical Sciences Priority Area.
From October 2000 to August 2004, she served as the deputy division director and the acting division director of the MCIS division at ONR with similar responsibility to the division director role she assumed in 2006.
Prior to joining the government, Masters worked as a member of the technical staff at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory of the California Institute of Technology, responsible for the development of spacecraft orbit determination capabilities for NASA’s deep-space missions.
She received her doctoral, master’s and bachelor’s degrees in mathematics from the University of California Irvine. She is a member of the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), where she serves as the vice chair for the society’s Imaging Science Activity Group, as well as the Association for Women in Mathematics.
Over her career, she has received numerous performance awards and group achievement awards. Her publications include a number of articles in technical journals, conference proceeding and a book.
