Members of the Navy Metalworking Center (NMC) attended the American Society of Naval Engineers’ "ASNE Day 2009" in National Harbor, Maryland, 8-9 April 2009. The schedule of events centered on the theme "Naval Engineering in Support of 21st Century Maritime Strategy" and included panel discussions, technical paper and poster sessions, and addresses from a number of leaders in the UnitedStates Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. The event also offered the opportunity for exhibitors to interact with others in the Navy, industry and academic communities.

(Left) Mark Smitherman, Director, Materials Solutions at Concurrent Technologies Corporation and an NMC Project Manager, presented a poster on a low-cost friction stir welding system being developed in a Navy Metalworking Center project. (Right) NMC staff members discuss some of the center’s successes and capabilities, including the development of laser-welded metallic sandwich panels and advances in other areas of metalworking.
