Mixed Signal (RF, EO and Digital) Processing

The Office of Naval Research Electronic Circuits Program seeks new approaches to achieving 100+ GHz devices, circuits, and signal processors, which includes electronic and photonic investigations in materials, components, and novel power efficient circuit architectures.  This work is expected to lead to the ability to efficiently synthesize, modulate, process, and digitize wideband RF signals at frequencies approaching the terahertz regime. Additional objectives of this work are expected to enable digital beam-forming and steering of wideband electronic antenna arrays and the use of analog and digital signal processing and noise shaping techniques to improve the dynamic range of RF transmit/receive systems. Techniques to control amplitude and phase jitter throughout RF systems are also relevant. 

Emphasis is on enabling affordable RF front-end and mixed-signal solutions without sacrificing performance.  The program is investigating:

  • Improvement of electronic and photonic device parameters including: switching speed, bandwidth, noise, dynamic range, linearity and robustness to dense signal environments. 
  •  Increasing the performance and efficiency of novel component technologies and architectures leading to size and power reduction.
