Special Research Awards in Ocean Acoustics Program

Graduate Traineeship Awards

These awards, for study and research leading to a doctoral degree, will be given to individuals who have demonstrated a special aptitude and desire for advanced training in ocean acoustics or the related disciplines of undersea signal processing, marine structural acoustics and transducer materials science. Applicants must plan to attend an institution with doctoral granting programs in the ocean sciences or related fields. Special consideration will be given to students who have passed doctoral candidate qualifying exams. These awards are 36 months in duration and cover the student's full tuition, salary and required fees. Applications should include a letter of intent (describing applicant's research interests and academic institution), three reference letters, and official transcripts.

Postdoctoral Fellowship Awards

These awards will be given to outstanding doctoral degree holders who wish to continue research in ocean acoustics or the related disciplines of undersea signal processing, marine structural acoustics and transducer materials science. Applicants must identify and provide a letter of recommendation from an ocean scientist or acoustician at an academic institution or naval laboratory with whom they propose to work. Special consideration will be given to applications that include collaboration with a scientist at a naval research laboratory or naval warfare center division. These postdoctoral awards are 24 months in duration and cover salary and benefits. A detailed planning letter is required.

Entry-Level Faculty Awards

The purpose of these awards is to encourage research careers in ocean acoustics or the related disciplines of undersea signal processing, marine structural acoustics and transducer materials science by supporting the research of outstanding young university faculty members. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and must apply within the first four years following the start of his or her first tenure-track appointment. Awardees will be selected based on past performance and quality of proposal. These awards are 36 months in duration and support young faculty scientists at $100,000 per year. A detailed technical proposal in the format described in "Planning Letter/Pre-Proposal and Proposal Process."
