Non-Destructive Evaluation and Prognostics: Fatigue and Fracture Damage Protection

This Office of Naval Research program focuses on fatigue and damage accumulation of structural metals and alloys, including nanostructured materials. Fatigue focuses on quantifying the damage parameters in terms of ΔK (cyclic damage) and Kmax (static damage), which are key measures of damage in materials. Because damage frequently arises from a combination of mechanical and corrosion effects, these mechanisms are the primary areas of focus in the program, with the goal of a reliable fatigue damage life prediction capability. Because they are important metals to the Navy, there is a focus on aluminum, steel and titanium alloys. In nanostructured alloys, research involves bi-modal and tri-modal microstructures of 5xxx aluminum alloys and their cumulative effects, in order to characterize fracture and fatigue as a function of processing variables.
