High-Energy Dense Oxidizers Program

A major challenge today is to provide the Navy with the next generation of energetic materials and concepts (e.g., explosives, propellants, reactive materials) to enable substantially higher performance ordnance with acceptable insensitivity characteristics. The Advanced Reactive and Energetic Materials program's goal is to develop ingredient technologies which, when inserted into ordnance/propulsion systems, will increase system performance 10 times while meeting insensitivity compliance objectives. The synthesis of high-energy dense oxidizers (HEDO) is an extremely challenging endeavor with the potential for high payoff. This technology will lead to significant advances in Navy and Marine Corps capabilities and operational/logistical efficiencies.

Research approaches to novel materials must maximize molecular design, synthesis efficiencies, predicted stabilities and achieve performance goals. The High-Energy Density Oxidizers program will explore a new class of ingredients that can surpass the oxygen content of ammonium perchlorate (AP); develop improvements in an initio determination of crystal structures, heats of formation and density prediction models; and develop a fundamental understanding of new molecule designs for HEDO synthesis with:

  • Ingredient density (2 g/cc)
  • Oxygen content greater than AP
  • Melting point greater than 1,500° C
  • Minimum number of synthesis steps
  • Sensitivities no worse than RDX/HMX
  • Low hydrogen and carbon; high oxygen and nitrogen content
