Sponsoring Scholars in Science Funding Initiative

The Office of Naval Research (ONR) collected white papers for the Sponsoring Scholars in Science Awards program at the 2011 Naval Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Forum. Innovative proposals may earn up to $100,000 in seed funding for further research and development of initiatives supporting K-12, higher education and educational research.

Challenge Topics:

To qualify, applicants were required to submit white papers in person at the event based on the following topics:  


Applicants were encouraged to visit ONR departmental booths and to talk with ONR representatives at the event to see how proposals align with departmental needs. Using the white paper format previously provided, applicants submitted ideas on site at the designated collection area. To be eligible, all proposals should have included: 

  • Presentation title
  • Author’s name, title, organization, phone and fax numbers, email and mailing addresses
  • Applicable ONR department, or code, and point of contact
  • Limited explanation of no more than 500 words, clearly indicating the program and/or research area addressed as well as: description of deliverable (e.g., study, prototype, proof-of-concept paper, etc.), approach and timeline; outline of how the idea supports the Naval Science and Technology Strategic Plan (along with any potential non-military applications, if applicable).

August ONR works with white paper finalists to turn these ideas into acceptable proposals, which are submitted in accordance with applicable contracts and grants guidance
