Computational Methods for Decision Making – Resource Optimization

The Computational Methods for Decision Making applied research program is composed of three thrusts — Large Scale Distributed Decision-making, Automated Image Understanding, and Resource Optimization.

The emphasis of the Resource Optimization program is the development of innovative models and solution strategies for naval-relevant problems in resource allocation. Resources are broadly defined to consist of all naval assets including, for example, funds, information, personnel, and vessels. This program complements Mathematical Optimization in that, while the former seeks to develop underlying mathematical theories that have the potential for future transference to naval problems, the latter desires applications, adaptations, and developments of optimization techniques that are motivated by already-identified naval challenges.

  • Efforts funded under this program can consist of the construction of new mathematical theories to solve pertinent naval problems, or the strategic application of known techniques to existing mathematical models.
  • The problem types considered here include linear, nonlinear, integer, stochastic, and combinatorial optimization.
  • Investigators are encouraged to interact with naval entities, including bases, labs, and universities to identify relevant problems.

Research Concentration Areas

The Resource Optimization program funds problems directly motivated by naval considerations that may include:

  • Optimization problems in a variety of naval scenarios, including interdiction, logistics, planning, scheduling, and sequencing.
  • Current optimization efforts lie in such areas as command and control, interdiction (defender-attacker-defender), logistics, and mission planning.

Research Challenges and Opportunities

  • Identify specific naval problems that can benefit from cutting-edge optimization methods.
  • Construct accurate mathematical models of challenging naval problems.
  • Devise the mathematical tools, including solution algorithms and software, for transitioning advances to the Navy.
