This work supports the Navy’s interest in advanced sea platform technology and sea-basing science and technology. At-sea sustainment is focused on the development of new technologies and techniques to improve the U.S. Navy’s ability to sustain surface and subsurface, manned and unmanned ships while they are operating at-sea.
Research Concentration Areas
- Technologies, manned and unmanned, that will allow the safe and efficient transfer of all manner of logistical supplies between ships at-sea to keep U.S. Navy ships fully operational without the need to return to port
- Provide the means of effectively, efficiently and securely communicating (voice and data) between ships, manned and unmanned, at sea without EM (electromagnetic) transmissions
Research Challenges and Opportunities
- Develop state-of-the-art technologies to improve on current, forward-deployed, logistic practices currently in use by the U.S. Navy — making them more efficient, safe and capable
- Develop unmanned systems for the distribution of logistics — from the smallest part to largest vehicle — to remote operating units both at-sea and ashore
- Reduce the Navy’s dependence on large surface vessels for re-supply and re-arming
- Explore the use of fly-away kits, unmanned systems and modern day foraging to reduce the demand on fleet assets while pursing forward deployed logistics
