Naval Engineering: A National Naval Responsibility
Naval engineering is a complex, multi-disciplinary field focused on providing the most capable ships to meet the needs of the U.S. Navy. The naval engineering field is fundamental to the design, development and delivery of all manned and unmanned surface and undersea naval platforms. Naval platforms must be capable of meeting their mission requirements in the full range of marine environmental conditions including severe storms at the sea surface and the high pressures in the deep ocean.
Naval engineering is one of seven National Naval Responsiblities -- identified by the Office of Naval Research in consultation with the U.S. Navy and experts drawn from the National Academies and elsewhere -- deemed as an area of critical importance to maintaining naval superiority.
The National Naval Responsibility in Naval Engineering (NNR-NE) is a portfolio of basic and applied research programs, many involving students, in the technical thrust areas to maintain and advance the combat capabilities and affordability of future naval platforms. The NNR-NE seeks to provide steady, long term support to the Navy-unique core disciplines of to maintain a healthy robust naval engineering research capacity and educational opportunities.
The NNR-NE core technical thrust areas include: ship design tools; ship structural design; hydromechanics; advanced hull design; advanced naval power systems; automation and control; sea vehicle survivability; propulsors; system integration; and naval engineering science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
