Cognitive Neuroscience of Perception and Attention
The aim of Cognitive Neuroscience of Perception and Attention is to elucidate the computational neurocognitive roles of attention and other top-down control mechanisms evident in mammalian vision and audition. The program seeks to exploit this understanding to enhance the adaptability and robustness of engineered intelligent system for the analysis of complex, dynamic real world events.

- Understand and exploit biological solutions to enhance the robustness and naval applicability of artificial intelligence for computer vision
- Elucidate and exploit biological solutions to enhance the robustness and naval applicability of artificial intelligence for auditory signal understanding
- Extend the techniques of artificial intelligence to facilitate complex collaborative decision-making
Research Challenges and Opportunities
- Basic research to understand the computational implications of the interplay of feedforward and feedback projections evident throughout the mammalian brain
- Basic research to extend the computational potential and scalability of compositional hierarchies in the visual and auditory brain
- Basic research to elucidate the mechanistic basis of context and priming effectives in biological vision and audition
- Basic research to understand the nature, limits, and computational implementation of visual, as distinct from or in addition to, propositional reasoning and decision-making
- Basic research to understand the processes underlying development of neural representations that capture the 3D properties of real world events
- Basic research to determine whether, and by what computational means, bio-sonar systems such as bats and marine mammals form robust 3D target representations
- Applied research to exploit computational principles from biology to enhance the robustness of electro-optical and Infrared (EO-IR) sensors for surveillance, target detection/classification and battle damage assessment
- Applied research exploiting principles and mechanisms drawn from bio-sonar to develop active sonar systems with the capability to characterize and classify underwater objects in high clutter
