ONR Presents Bowen Award for Composite Materials Test Method

On November 27, the U.S. Office of Naval Research (ONR) honored two engineers who patented a nondestructive method for detecting flaws and anomalies in composite materials. Rear Admiral William E. Landay, Chief of Naval Research, presented the 2006 Vice Admiral Harold G. Bowen Award to Dr. Colin P. Ratcliffe and Dr. Roger M. Crane for their “Nondestructive Method for Detecting Structural Anomalies in Composites,” also known as Structural Irregularity and Damage Evaluation Routine or SIDER (U.S. Patent 6,799,126).

CDR Dylan Schmorrow Receives First Leland S. Kollmorgen Spirit of Innovation Award

Commander Dylan Schmorrow of the U.S. Office of Naval Research became the first recipient of the Leland S. Kollmorgen Spirit of Innovation Award, presented by the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES) on October 2. The officers of the HFES Augmented Cognition Technical Group selected Schmorrow for this award, which was presented at the 4th Augmented Cognition International Conference in Baltimore.

ONR Honors Shlesinger With 2006 Dr. Fred E. Saalfeld Award

On October 30, 2007, Chief of Naval Research Rear Admiral William Landay III and the Office of Naval Research (ONR) honored Dr. Michael F. Shlesinger as the 2006 recipient of the Dr. Fred E. Saalfeld Award for Outstanding Lifetime Achievement in Science at a ceremony at ONR´s headquarters in Arlington, Va.

ONR and NSWC Sponsor AUV Fest 2007 in Panama City, Florida

AUV Fest 2007 will run from June 4–15 at the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) in Panama City, Florida. This event, sponsored by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) and NSWC, aims to introduce fleet sailors to autonomous underwater vehicles, or AUVs. ONR has sponsored AUV Fests about once every 18 months since 1997, and this will be the first time it will be hosted in Panama City.

Infantry Immersion Trainer Begins Training Marines in a Virtual Environment

The Office of Naval Research (ONR) TechSolutions program has transformed a former tomato packing plant on Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif., into a state-of-the-art Infantry Immersion Trainer (IIT) prototype. Launched in November 2007 as a technology demonstrator, the IIT began real training of Marines before all of the facility´s high-tech equipment was even fully operational.
