The results are in for the recent Naval Horizons student essay contest. The contest organizer, the Department of the Navy's (DoN) Naval STEM Coordination Office (NSCO), which is located at the Office of Naval Research, is excited about the growth of the contest since its premiere. In the 2022 contest, over 710 students were awarded a $200 cash prize.

The Office of Naval Research (ONR) Reserve Component saw its new commander sworn in this week — Capt. Loukas Papadopoulos, a decorated naval engineer and information warfare (space) officer.

A unique maritime competition, sponsored by the Office of Naval Research (ONR), recently took place in Sarasota, Florida. The 16th annual RoboBoat competition brought together teams of students from across the globe to assemble and navigate autonomous unmanned surface vehicles (USV) through a series of real-world challenges, including coastal surveillance, port security and oceanographic exploration, at Sarasota’s Nathan Benderson Park.

The American Society of Naval Engineers (ASNE) has awarded its most prestigious accolade — the Harold E. Saunders Award for Lifetime Achievement — to Kelly Cooper, a program officer in the Office of Naval Research (ONR)’s Sea Warfare and Weapons Department, for outstanding contributions to the Navy and nation over her career.

The International Cooperative Engagement Program for Polar Research (ICE-PPR) International Workshop for Sea Ice and Icebergs was held recently at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. The workshop attendees focused on three areas: science and technology researchers who study data and create new algorithms or sensors; the centers that produce ice analysis products for mariners; and the operators themselves, personnel from the U.S. and Canadian Navies and Coast Guards who have operated ships in polar regions.
