Aviation Technology Program

Navy and Marine Corps have a need for many fixed wing, rotary wing, and vertical take off and landing (VTOL) aircraft to perform missions across the spectrum: SEAD/strike, close air support, assault support, logistics, and anti-air, anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare. These forces have a unique need to operate from ships at sea, in a highly corrosive and electromagnetically intense environment. Shipboard landings require precision relative navigation, compensation for decks that pitch, roll, yaw and heave, and for highly turbulent airwakes. Shipboard operations also require unique designs to accommodate limited space and safe operations and support in densely packed areas. The Marine Corps needs an all-VTOL air vehicle force — with speed and agility — to execute its ship-to-object maneuver and distributed operations. These challenges require focused core investments as well as close coordination and integration with other services and agencies that have substantial investments in air vehicle technologies also.
