Media Opportunity: Navy S&T on display at New York City Fleet Week 2006

Please join the Office of Naval Research on board the USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) to learn about some of the exciting technologies being developed for the Navy and Marine Corps.

We will feature:
• RATTLRS full-scale mockup of a hypersonic missile, currently in development, which will be able to loiter over a target. Also on display, the turbine engine that will allow the missile to reach speeds greater than Mach 3.
• VirtuSphere training environment – a large plastic sphere that lets a user move in all directions while immersed in a virtual environment.
• SpeechGear handheld translation device immediately translates live, free speech from one language to another. "Restore" program electronically repairs damaged pages of text and translates them. Currently being evaluated by Marines.
• Lightweight Mortar System will lighten the load for 81 mm mortar units by using novel materials and designs.
• LightSpeed communication device allows digital transmission of voice and data – over a regular pair of handheld binoculars or the "big eyes" mounted on Navy ships.
• Silver Fox unmanned aerial vehicle provides an eye in the sky to troops on the ground.
• and the Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory will also be on board with several technologies, including the WASP micro unmanned aerial vehicle, Modular Wearable Computer Suite, weapons systems, Dragon Doc Corpsman kit, and more.
