What: Speak with developers of the latest Navy/Marine Corps technologies and see live demonstrations. Take a virtual tour of a battle zone and learn to weld pipes in a virtual shipyard using ONR´s virtual reality training systems.
When: Thursday, May 24, and Friday, May 25—By appointment
Where: USS Wasp (LHD 1) at Pier 90, Manhattan (50th St. at 12th Ave.)
Please join the Office of Naval Research on board the USS Wasp (LHD 1) to learn about some of the exciting technologies being developed for the Navy and Marine Corps:
• Infantry Immersive Training uses virtual reality and real-world stage sets to immerse Marines and soldiers in lifelike simulations of hostile environments, burning buildings, and other life-or-death situations. The training system will be on display, with experts on hand to demonstrate the system, answer questions, and provide hands-on opportunities to use the technology.
• Virtual reality welder training lets welder trainees see and feel the welder´s torch on "virtual" metal. Try your hand at virtual welding! The training system will be on display, with experts on hand to demonstrate the system and answer questions.
• Mine and obstacle breaching darts disable buried or submerged mines by penetrating inside the mine and neutralizing or detonating the explosive charge. Models of the delivery system projectile and darts will be on display.
• Electromagnetic Rail Gun fires projectiles at up to Mach 8 without the use of explosives or propellants. Models of the proposed prototype guns and projectiles will be on display, based on the working demonstrator at Dahlgren, Virginia.
• RATTLRS mockup of a supersonic cruise missile technology demonstration project, currently in development.
• Joint Light Tactical Vehicle Designed for today´s battleground, with better passenger protection, this vehicle will provide increased force protection, survivability, and improved capacity over the current up-armored High Mobility Multi-Wheeled Vehicle, while balancing mobility and transportability requirements with total ownership costs. Model will be on display.
• Lightweight Ship´s Door is watertight, rugged, and weighs 213 pounds, compared with 290 pounds for existing doors. Laser welding makes the design both lightweight and durable. Try out the full-sized display door for yourself and feel the difference.
• Hybrid welding system combines laser welding, gas metal arc welding, and robotic control to weld large pipes and metal plates up to 30 times faster and with fewer defects than arc welding alone. Samples of welded pipes will be on display.
