Navy Metalworking Center Hosts ShipTech 2009

Shipbuilding affordability was once again the focus of ShipTech 2009, which was held on March 10-11 at the Beau Rivage Resort in Biloxi, Mississippi. More than 350 people from the domestic shipbuilding industry, its supplier base, U.S. Navy Program Offices and U.S. Navy-sponsored research programs participated in general and technical sessions.

The event’s theme centered on improving shipbuilding affordability, which leads to the ultimate goal of helping the Navy carry out its many missions with a sufficient number of ships that employ superior technology. This is the 12th year for ShipTech, which is sponsored by the Office of Naval Research and the National Shipbuilding Research Program.
Rear Admiral Nevin P. Carr, Jr., Chief of Naval Research, and Art Divens, Executive Director, Amphibious and Auxiliary Ships, Program Executive Office, Ships, provided keynote addresses.

RADM Carr also facilitated a panel discussion that included RDML Michael E. McMahon, Program Executive Officer, Aircraft Carriers; RDML Ronald J. Rabago, Program Executive Officer and Director of Acquisition Programs, U.S. Coast Guard; Art Divens, Executive Director, Amphibious and Auxiliary Ships, Program Executive Office, Ships; Jack Evans, Executive Director, Program Executive Office, Submarines; Kurt A. Hesch, Director of Virginia Class Program Design and Engineering, General Dynamics Electric Boat; and Peter C. Diakun, Vice President, Platform Integration and Technology Development, Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding.

Technical presentations were categorized into four areas: production processes, product design, materials and business processes/systems technologies.
