Navy Metalworking Center Participates in DMC 2008

The Navy Metalworking Center (NMC) participated in the Defense Manufacturing Conference (DMC 2008) in Orlando, Florida, 1-4 December 2008. NMC team members talked with many of the 1,000+ attendees from government, industry and academia about the center’s capabilities and successes in implementing advanced metalworking technology for the U.S. Navy.

In addition to exhibiting at DMC 2008, NMC was represented by three NMC team members who presented on select projects. Dr. Juan Valencia presented the results of an alloy 625 cold formability study for CVN 21, Erik Oller addressed the benefits of hybrid laser-arc welding for HSLA-80 T-beam manufacture and Kevin Stefanick spoke on hybrid laser-welded metallic sandwich panels for shipbuilding applications.

At the conference, Stefanick’s project was presented with the 2008 Defense Manufacturing Technology Achievement Award, which is given by the Department of Defense Joint Defense Manufacturing Technology Panel . The project team was honored for developing the LASer-welded corrugated-CORe (LASCOR) metallic sandwich panel technology that is currently being implemented on the DDG 1000 class of guided-missile destroyer ships and is saving the Navy considerable acquisition cost.

DMC is the principal national forum for discussion of DoD industrial base issues, programs and capabilities, as well as counterpart industry initiatives and concerns.
