What: Speak with developers of the latest Navy/Marine Corps technologies and see live demonstrations. See next-generation military vehicle technology, take a virtual tour of a battle zone, or interact with underwater robots.
When: Thursday, May 22, and Friday, May 23—By appointment
Where: USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) at Pier 88 in Manhattan and at the pier at 355 Front Street on Staten Island.
Please join the Office of Naval Research on board the USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) and at our display at the pier at Staten Island to learn about some of the exciting technologies being developed for today’s Navy and Marine Corps:
Vehicles and Interactive Displays
- Combat Tactical Vehicle, designed for today's battleground with better passenger protection will provide increased force protection, survivability, and improved capacity over the current up-armored HMMWV, while balancing mobility and transportability requirements with total ownership costs. The full-sized, fully operational technology demonstrator will be on hand from 21-23 May in Manhattan and available for media opportunities.
- Gunslinger Gunfire Detection System is a series of hi-tech sensors integrated with a weapon mount on a HMMWV that can detect where enemy gunfire is coming from and automatically move the weapon in the direction of the fire so friendly forces can respond. The complete system, which recently returned from a successful tour of duty in Iraq, will be on display on board the Kearsarge.
- Unmanned Surface Vehicle is a 36-foot-long unmanned sea surface vehicle equipped with a range of sensors and communications systems that allow it to perform surveillance and other missions at sea controlled either remotely by an operator or autonomously all on its own. You’ll be able to view the USV at our display on board the Kearsarge.
- Scan Eagle Unmanned Aerial Vehicle was originally built to help tuna fisherman find fish at sea but is now used for aerial reconnaissance and can be integrated with other surface and aerial sensors for a complete battlefield picture. The Scan Eagle weighs 40 pounds and its ten-foot wingspan lifts the four-foot long fuselage where the engine, avionics, GPS and a fully directional video camera are housed. You can see the Scan Eagle at our display on board the Kearsarge.
- Virtual Immersive Training uses virtual reality and real-world stage sets to immerse Marines and soldiers in lifelike simulations of hostile environments, burning buildings, and other life-or-death situations. The training system will be on display on board the Kearsarge, with experts on hand to demonstrate the system through several different scenarios and to provide hands-on opportunities to use the technology.
- Sea Perch is an ONR-funded K-12 educational program managed by the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers that teaches kids how to build their own underwater robotic vehicles. You’ll be able to see some of these robots and test them out in special pools at our Staten Island display.
