Subsurface Platform Science & Technology

Science and technology (S&T) efforts focused on preserving and advancing the advantage of U.S. Navy platforms over adversaries. Areas of focus within the program include, but are not limited to:

  • Technologies improving platform survivability
    • Enhanced recoverability: technologies for enabling a platform to rapidly regain military capability after surviving an attack
    • Reduced susceptibility: enhanced platform stealth through research into signature mechanisms and mitigation technologies
    • Reduced vulnerability: technologies and design methodologies for reducing the vulnerability of platforms to an adversary attack
  • Advanced thrust production technologies providing options for future platform designers

This work supports the Navy’s interest in advanced sea platform performance S&T, advanced sea platform survivability S&T, submarine S&T, and naval engineering.

Research Concentration Areas

Research areas target the program goals of enhancing the mission effectiveness and endurance of submarine platforms. These include:

  • Advanced motor technologies providing options for future submarine designs
  • Efforts advancing submarine platform survival from attacks in combat
  • Efforts to provide an enduring platform stealth advantage over all potential adversaries
  • Technologies for reducing depot maintenance and enhancing platform availability at lowest feasible operating cost

Research Challenges and Opportunities

  • Advanced motor technologies providing high torque and power in a smaller geometry
  • Technologies enabling design and construction of submarine platforms with greater survivability, combat power and endurance
  • Technologies for improving understanding and mitigation of signatures in order to ensure an enduring platform stealth advantage in submarines
