Multi-scale Mechanics

The multi-scale mechanics research area endeavors to develop multiscale and multiphysics mechanics theories that bridge the nano scale to the continuum scale to predict material and structural strength.

Research Concentration Areas

  • Novel mechanics theories
  • Advancements in non-destructive evaluation procedures
  • Innovative experimental methods
  • Quasi-static and dynamic loading conditions including but not limited to seaway, fatigue, impact and hygrothermal
  • Advanced structural materials including but not limited to composites, thermoset polymers, high performance thermoplastic polymers, glasses and additively manufactured metallics

Research Challenges and Opportunities

The below research challenges and opportunities are included to help define the research area. High risk, novel research ideas that are beyond those included below are encouraged.

  • Discovery of mechanics theories to define the response of material flaws, groups of flaws, and distribution of flaws to predict material strength
  • New in-situ non-destructive evaluation technologies and methodologies to reveal material and structure as-built local properties and imperfections that can work across existing and yet to be developed materials
  • Innovative experimental methods and instrumentation to understand the local and global internal strain state of a material while under mechanical loading including the onset and propagation of damage
