Accelerating Warfighter Readiness through Adaptive/Tailored Training seeks to create, implement, and evaluate Science of Learning research and training design principles that strengthen the Navy and Marine Corps’ capacity to engage learner focus during training and leverage validated techniques that substantially facilitate learning in naval classroom environments, reducing training time and costs, and yielding higher mastery and earlier deployment. In the future, these training design principles will be implemented in Live, Virtual, Constructive (LVC)-based Naval training exercises, expanding the utilization of LVC training, and improving its effectiveness and efficiency for individuals and teams.
Research Concentration Areas
Advance the Science of Learning to increase training effectiveness in Live, Virtual, and Constructive environments:
Foundational research into extending the conceptual and algorithmic basis of the science of learning to create, implement, and evaluate training design principles that strengthen the capacity to engage learner focus during training, as well as investigate how to best leverage validated techniques that substantially facilitate learning in Naval classroom environments, reducing training time and costs, and yielding higher mastery.
Applied Research for applying the concepts and methods of the science of learning to extended reality (including virtual reality and augmented reality), artificial intelligence, and adaptive training algorithms for application in naval schoolhouses and Live, Virtual, Constructive (LVC)-based training for both individuals and teams. Ultimately, these techniques will be used to enhance task focus and content mastery during training and operations.
Research Challenges and Opportunities
Develop and Validate AI-Driven Personalization: Pioneer and evaluate advanced AI algorithms to create adaptive training models. These models should be based on expert Naval performance and individual learner differences to tailor content and pacing, ensuring a more efficient and effective learning experience for every Sailor and Marine.
Optimize for Complex Naval Training Environments: Investigate and apply adaptive training techniques to complex, scenario-based team training within (LVC) training settings. A key goal is to develop methods that reduce cognitive workload, thereby increasing learning velocity and retention.
Ensure Scalable and Future-Ready Solutions: Create platform-agnostic adaptive training frameworks to accelerate the development and deployment of effective training across the fleet. This includes extending the science of learning to fully exploit the unique capabilities of emerging VR/AR/MR technologies.
