This portfolio aims to invest in fundamental and applied human physiology- and human factors-focused research efforts that are relevant to contemporary and projected U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps operational capability gaps. Current focus areas include maritime mass casualty survival optimization, operations in extreme cold and austere environments, and directed energy bioeffects.
Research Concentration Areas, Challenges and Opportunities
Maritime Mass Casualty Survival Optimization – Enhance casualty survival and reintegration following an isolating event at sea. Includes location tracking, secure communication, proof-of-life and physiological monitoring, and survivability during acute and sustained time at sea following maritime mass casualty events.
Operations in Extreme Cold and Austere Environments – Understand and characterize the physiological effects of extreme cold and other austere environments, including cold water submersion. Develop or enhance technologies and strategies to track and improve physical and/or cognitive performance.
Directed Energy Bioeffects – Characterize and treat the effects of directed energy weapon and high energy laser injuries on organs and tissues.
