Chief of Naval Research Radm. Jay M. Cohen will present the Vice Admiral Harold G. Bowen Award for Patented Inventions to three Navy researchers in a ceremony at the Office of Naval Research on Thursday, April 7, 2005. The patent awarded to Peter S. McGraw, John L. Drake, and Thomas H. Hanes has helped the Navy find better ways to store plastic waste on board many of its ships.

On October 30, 2007, Chief of Naval Research Rear Admiral William Landay III and the Office of Naval Research (ONR) honored Dr. Michael F. Shlesinger as the 2006 recipient of the Dr. Fred E. Saalfeld Award for Outstanding Lifetime Achievement in Science at a ceremony at ONR´s headquarters in Arlington, Va.
