Thermal Science and Engineering

This program supports basic and applied research on multi-phase heat transfer, fluid dynamics and nanostructured materials. The program supports the development of technologies to efficiently acquire, transport, and reject heat and enable higher power density electronic systems. This work supports the Navy’s interest in advanced naval power and energy systems science and technology.

Research Concentration Areas

  • Enhance thermal transport through materials and interfaces in power electronic components
  • Improve understanding of phase change heat transfer and two-phase flow in order to enable improved electronic cooling system

Research Challenges and Opportunities

  • Advanced thermal fluids and high thermal conductivity materials for improved heat transfer
  • Advanced thermal management system architectures and components to enable high energy laser systems
  • Development of higher efficiency, smaller and lighter HVAC system architectures
  • Enhancement of heat transfer through interfacial engineering
  • Fundamental studies and physics-based models of evaporative cooling, including heat transfer and critical heat flux
  • Multiscale, thermal models of electronic systems and system-level thermal simulations
  • New materials and architectures for thermal energy storage
