Expeditionary Robotics, Autonomic and Autonomy

The goal of the Robotic, Autonomic and Autonomy program is to develop technologies and discover methods for creating unmanned systems for our expeditionary forces. The aim is to provide expeditionary warfighters with tools to enhance their abilities to fight the-fights-tonight as well as the-fights-to-come.

Research Concentration Areas

  • Robots with non-traditional locomotion and/or form-factors (e.g., wheeled robots with legs that can occasionally fly and swim)
  • Multi-domain, cross-domain, and trans-domain robotics (i.e., undersea, surface, land, air, outer-space, and/or sociocultural-space)
  • Active and passive day-night multi-modal sensing with sensor fusion
  • GNSS-denied localization and navigation
  • Allocentric and/or egocentric mental modeling for navigation and control
  • Multi-mission multi-domain deliberative-planning and reactive-control
  • Quantitative and/or qualitative causal reasoning with semantic grounding
  • Computational moral cognition and/or human-level rationalization
  • Cognitive modeling to mimic and/or predict human behavioral responses
  • Trust & deception between unmanned systems and humans (i.e., when and how can the unmanned system deceive or trust the human, as well as vice versa)
  • Human-System integration and Human-robot teaming
  • Decentralize or peer-to-peer-only multi-agent collaboration
